The Accessible Taxi and Busing Program is a provincial grant offered through the Department of Social Supports and Well-Being.

Who is eligible and who can apply for the Newfoundland and Labrador Accessible Taxi and Busing Program

You may apply if you are:

  • An individual

 

  • A business

 

  • A Newfoundland and Labrador-based nonprofit organization

 

  • A municipality

 

  • A Local Service District

 

  • An Indigenous government or organization

 

You must be able to provide accessible transportation services within Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

Applicants must also:

  • Hold a valid transportation service license

 

  • Be in good standing with Companies and Deeds

 

 

 

What does the Newfoundland and Labrador Accessible Taxi and Busing Program fund?

Funding can help with:

 

  • Purchasing a new vehicle that can accommodate mobility devices

 

Vehicles must be able to safely transport passengers using wheelchairs or scooters.

The grant does not cover costs beyond the approved amount. Any extra expenses are the applicant’s responsibility.

 

What are the conditions of the Newfoundland and Labrador Accessible Taxi and Busing Program?

If approved, you must commit to:

  • Providing accessible transportation for at least two years

 

 

  • Offering advanced booking outside regular hours when needed

 

  • Tracking fares by classification

 

 

  • Submitting an annual report after the first year

 

  • Cooperating with ongoing provincial audits

 

Applications are reviewed based on:

  • Demonstrated local demand

 

  • Experience and training in accessible transportation

 

  • Capacity to deliver safe and respectful service

 

  • Clear implementation timeline

 

  • Ability to meet accessibility standards

 

Priority consideration may be given to:

  • Rural applicants with demonstrated need

 

  • Operators offering cross-provincial travel

 

Partnerships between neighboring communities are encouraged in lower population areas.

Successful applicants can receive up to $25,000.

 

Payment works in one of two ways:

To the vendor

  • 80 percent is issued when the contract is signed

 

  • 20 percent is paid after verified completion of the retrofit

 

To the applicant

 

Invoices must match the approved funding details.

 

Does the funding support wheelchair accessible vehicles?

Oui.

The program is specifically designed to support vehicles that transport passengers who use mobility devices. That includes vehicles with ramps, lifts, and securement systems that meet accessibility standards.

Accessible service must be the priority of the operation.

Late submissions will not be accepted.
