(Video) An Accessible Visit to The Museum

Accessibility at the CMHR isn’t just about ramps or transportation—it’s about dignity, connection, and shared experiences. This short visit shows how inclusive design enables full participation, from smooth van rides to museum towers. Watch to see how accessibility becomes the gateway to joy, independence, and belonging.

Key Moments in this Video

1
What makes transportation truly accessible?
"I've been looking forward to today for quite a while. I'm going to pick up our friends from L’Arche in this van. We're headed to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Usually on this channel, we talk about floor plans and ramps. But today isn’t just about a van—it’s about what the van makes possible. We're going to see what transportation is like when it's accessible. And by removing that barrier, we get to focus on just that experience."

How does the CMHR support inclusion?
“We all deserve to have our basic human rights respected,” is heard from one of the exhibits. There's a joyful tone, with Jordan joking, “They're jealous of my wheelchair,” and Simon replying, “Yes, they are.” The environment feels affirming and welcoming, blending accessibility with dignity. It’s not just a visit—it’s a celebration of equal access to culture.

What did the visit feel like for participants?
Simon: "How was the ride here?" Jordan: "The ride was good. Wasn’t too bumpy. You were a good driver. The best part was honestly how smooth it was. Because I have a wheelchair van myself, but it’s an older van. So it’s always nice to drive in a newer van." Simon: "Could you see lots?" Jordan: "Oh yeah, I could see lots. The view from the van was very good." Simon: "What was the best part about the museum?" Jordan: "The best part for me would be the tower. That was fun. And the little guy here—I really like the guy. I'm going to keep it, put it in my room somewhere. Jordan: "Nothing better to do than come to the Human Rights Museum with MoveMobility on a Friday."

Why does accessible design matter beyond mobility?
"I just dropped everyone off. And honestly, I’m still buzzing. That was such a fun afternoon. It really proves that accessible transportation is not just getting from point A to point B. It's all about inclusion. Watching the group move from the vehicle through the museum really proved why accessible design matters. And when you design the world to be accessible, you include everyone. If you want to see more great stories like this and learn more about accessibility, make sure you subscribe."
