What is the Build Communities Strong Fund?

Funding opportunity

The Build Communities Strong Fund is a new federal funding program that supports infrastructure projects across Canada.

The goal is to help communities grow, improve services, and build the spaces and systems people use every day.

This fund supports projects tied to:

  • Housing

  • Healthcare

  • Public transit

  • Roads and bridges

  • Parks and recreation

  • Climate protection

  • Water and wastewater systems

  • Colleges and universities

The federal government plans to invest $51 billion over 10 years, starting in 2026-27. After that, the fund is expected to continue with $3 billion each year.

Who is eligible and who can apply for the Build Communities Strong Fund?

The Build Communities Strong Fund works through three different funding streams:

  • Provincial and territorial stream

  • Direct delivery stream

  • Community stream

Depending on the stream, eligible applicants may include:

  • Provinces and territories

  • Municipalities

  • Indigenous communities

  • Community organizations

  • Public institutions

  • Regional infrastructure groups

Most local organizations and municipalities will likely access the funding through their province, territory, or municipal association. In Ontario and British Columbia, some funding may flow through municipal associations.

What does the Build Communities Strong Fund support?

The fund supports a wide range of public infrastructure projects, including:

  • Roads and bridges

  • Drinking water systems

  • Wastewater infrastructure

  • Community centres

  • Parks and recreation spaces

  • Fire halls

  • Broadband and internet access

  • Local airports

  • Cultural and tourism spaces

  • Colleges and universities

  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities

  • Climate resilience projects

The Community Stream alone includes 19 eligible project categories. The most common projects funded in the past have been roads, bridges, public transit, drinking water, wastewater systems, and recreation facilities.

What are the conditions of the Build Communities Strong Fund?

There are a few important conditions to know:

  • Funding usually flows through provinces and territories first

  • Communities must follow their province’s rules and agreements

  • Some provinces may need to match federal funding

  • Projects should support housing growth and affordability when possible

  • Land purchases are not eligible

  • Community relocation projects are not eligible

  • Hospitals and schools are not funded through the Community Stream, although they may qualify under other streams

How much funding is available?

The total funding available is very large:

  • $51 billion over 10 years

  • $17.2 billion for provinces and territories

  • $6 billion for direct delivery projects

  • $27.8 billion for community infrastructure

  • $2.5 billion to $3 billion per year through the Community Stream alone

Does the funding support wheelchair accessible vehicles or mobile medical units?

In most cases, wheelchair accessible vans and mobile medical units are not directly listed as eligible purchases.

Still, there may be situations where these vehicles could fit:

  • A wheelchair van used for public transit or community transportation

  • Mobile healthcare vehicles connected to larger healthcare projects

  • Transit fleets serving seniors, people with disabilities, or rural communities

The strongest fit is when the vehicle is part of a bigger community transportation or healthcare program instead of a stand-alone vehicle purchase.

Deadline dates to know

The Build Communities Strong Fund officially launched in April 2026.

Applications for some Direct Delivery projects are already opening, while Community Stream funding continues to flow through provinces and territories.

Important dates include:

  • April 7, 2026: Fund officially launched

  • 2026-27: Funding begins

  • Ongoing: Provinces and territories distribute funds locally
