What happens when someone cannot get to work, a medical appointment, a community event, or even a family gathering because transportation is not accessible? For many organizations, that question is becoming harder to ignore. A wheelchair accessible van can mean the difference between someone staying connected to their community or staying home.
Without reliable transportation, people can miss appointments, lose independence, and feel isolated from the people and places that matter most. In fact, nearly two-thirds of Canadians with disabilities who used federally regulated transportation faced barriers. When your organization can close that gap, you help create more freedom, confidence, and opportunity for the people you support.
At MoveMobility, we’ve spent more than 20 years helping organizations remove barriers to transportation and care. In the past three years alone, we’ve built more than 480 wheelchair vans and 180 mobile medical units. We are one of Canada’s two Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifiers, hold Stellantis QPro certification, and every one of our vehicles carries the National Safety Mark. For this project, we partnered with enVision Community Living to help them create better access for the people they support every day.
In this case study, you’ll learn:
- Who enVision Community Living is
- What challenge they were facing
- When they purchased their new van
- What a typical day looks like with the van in use
- How better transportation opened the door to more independence and connection
Who is enVision Community Living?
enVision Community Living is a non-profit organization that helps people with intellectual disabilities live the life they choose in their own communities. Their work is built around a simple idea. Everyone deserves the chance to belong, grow, build relationships, and take part in everyday life.
For many people, that can mean having support at home, help finding a job, opportunities to volunteer, or a way to stay active and connected in the community. enVision focuses on meeting each person where they are and building support around their goals, interests, and needs.
Their values are easy to understand and even easier to respect:
- Integrity: Doing the right thing for the people they support.
- Empathy: Understanding what people need and treating them with care.
- Respect: Helping people live with dignity, choice, and independence.
How does enVision support people?
enVision offers a wide range of services across southeastern Manitoba, including communities like Steinbach, Niverville, Ste. Anne, St. Pierre, and La Broquerie.
Their residential services support people who may need help with daily living. Some people live on their own with a few hours of support each week. Others may need staff available around the clock. In every case, the goal stays the same. Help people become as independent as possible while staying connected to family, friends, and their community.
They also offer:
- Day programs: Focused on personal growth, recreation, skill building, and social connection.
- Retirement programs: Giving older adults opportunities to stay active, volunteer, and spend time with friends.
- Supported independent living: Helping people manage things like budgeting, cooking, laundry, and home care.
- Shared living options: Matching people with families or caregivers in a home setting.
- Respite services: Giving families a break while making sure their loved one still has safe and meaningful support.
- Employment services: Helping people find jobs, build confidence, and become active members of the workforce.
Why is their work so important?
When you look at everything enVision does, one thing becomes very clear. Their work is about much more than support services. It is about creating opportunities.
Someone may need transportation to get to work each day. Another person may need help getting to a volunteer position, a swimming lesson, or a visit with family. A person in a retirement program may want to spend the day at a community event instead of staying home. Those moments may seem small from the outside, but they can have a huge impact on someone’s confidence, independence, and quality of life.
That’s where accessible transportation becomes such an important part of the picture.
A wheelchair accessible van gives organizations like enVision the ability to help more people get where they want and need to go. It helps turn plans into action. It creates more flexibility for staff, more freedom for participants, and more chances for people to stay connected to the world around them.
Next, it helps to understand the transportation challenge enVision was facing before their new van arrived.
What challenge was enVision facing?
As much as accessible transportation can open doors, older vehicles can slowly start to close them again.
For organizations like enVision Community Living, transportation plays a big role in daily life. People rely on it to get to work, attend programs, visit family, go shopping, volunteer, and take part in community activities. When a vehicle starts to age, it can make those trips harder than they need to be.
“This vehicle was purchased to replace an older version.”
-Shilesa Mackay, Manager & Transportation
That statement says a lot.
We know how difficult it can be to keep an older wheelchair accessible van on the road. Over time, older vehicles can become less reliable and less comfortable for the people riding in them. Rides may feel bumpier. Wheelchair tie-down systems can feel dated. Entry and exit may take more time. Heating and cooling can be less consistent. Even the little things, like extra road noise or tighter interior layouts, can make a long day feel even longer.
For staff, an older van can also create added stress. There is always that lingering worry about maintenance issues, unexpected repairs, or a vehicle being unavailable when people depend on it most. That can make it harder to plan outings, appointments, and day-to-day routines with confidence.
We understood where enVision was coming from. They needed a wheelchair accessible van that felt safer, smoother, and better suited to the people they support every day.
The next step was finding the right fit for their team and the people who rely on them. They decided to purchase the P4 wheelchair van in the fall of 2025.
What does a day in the life look like with the new wheelchair van?
Every day looks a little different at enVision Community Living, and that is exactly why reliable transportation matters so much.
Some people may be heading to work. Others might be on their way to a volunteer position, a recreational activity, a medical appointment, or a visit with family and friends. For older adults in retirement programs, it could mean getting out for coffee, shopping, or a community event. For people in day programs, it may mean horseback riding, swimming, grocery shopping, or going to the gym.
Without accessible transportation, many of those moments become difficult or impossible to reach.
“This vehicle is being used to provide transportation for people we serve to be able to get out in the community.”
-Shilesa Mackay
That’s what makes a wheelchair accessible van so important.
For many people, getting out into the community is about much more than getting from one place to another. It is about feeling included and having a sense of routine, purpose, and connection. It is about being able to say yes to the things many people take for granted.
How does accessible transportation support everyday life?
The new wheelchair accessible van helps enVision create more opportunities throughout the day.
That could include:
- Getting someone to their job on time
- Helping people attend volunteer placements
- Taking part in day programs and recreational activities
- Visiting family members and friends
- Attending medical appointments and therapy sessions
- Going shopping, running errands, or getting groceries
- Joining in on local events and activities
A day with accessible transportation often means fewer barriers and more flexibility. Staff can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time focusing on the people they support. Participants can spend less time waiting and more time enjoying the places they want to be.
There is also something important about comfort. A smoother ride, easier entry, and more room inside the van can make people feel more relaxed and confident. That matters when someone is spending a full day out in the community.
The smaller moments make all the difference
Sometimes, the smallest moments can have the biggest impact.
A trip to the grocery store can build confidence and life skills. A ride to a volunteer shift can create a sense of pride. A visit with family can strengthen relationships. Even something as simple as going out for coffee can help someone feel connected and included.
Those moments can shape how people see themselves and their place in the world.
When people have access to transportation, they have more chances to build friendships, learn new skills, stay active, and be part of their community. That is what enVision works hard to create every day, and the right vehicle helps make it possible.
If you had to tell another organization why these vehicles are life-changing, what would you say?
“It provides people with accessible transportation to be out in the community.”
-Shilesa Mackay
This carries a lot of meaning.
Accessible transportation gives people more choice in how they spend their day. It gives them the chance to take part in activities that bring joy, purpose, and connection. It helps people stay involved with the people and places that matter most to them.
For organizations, it can also change how support is delivered. Staff have more flexibility. Programs can reach more places. Community outings become easier to plan. Families can feel more confident knowing their loved one has a safe and reliable way to get where they need to go.
Most of all, a wheelchair accessible van helps people feel seen, included, and valued.
That’s why these vehicles are life-changing. They help remove one of the biggest barriers people face and replace it with something much better.
Opportunity.
