Located in Standoff, Alberta, the Blood Tribe has many entities that support members\u2019 daily lives, including Housing, Community Engagement, Health, EMS, and more.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<figure>\r\n<figure style=\"width: 662px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Blood-Tribe-Department-of-Health-located-in-Standoff-AB.jpg\" alt=\"Blood Tribe Department of Health located in Standoff, AB\" width=\"662\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Blood-Tribe-Department-of-Health-located-in-Standoff-AB.jpg 662w, https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Blood-Tribe-Department-of-Health-located-in-Standoff-AB-640x407.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Blood Tribe is located in southern Alberta.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"background-color: #f5f5f5;\"><strong>Identifying Needs for More Access to Health Services<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During 2020, Kash Shade, the Blood Tribe Department of Health\u2019s Director of Non-Insured Health Benefits, worked with MoveMobility to add accessible medical transportation vehicles to the department\u2019s fleet.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later in the year, Mr. Shade reached out to MoveMobility about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/fr\/camionnettes-medicales-mobiles\/mobile-medical-clinic-van\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mobile Medical Unit<\/a> we had recently launched. He explained to us that community members often experience transportation challenges:<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><em><strong>\u201cOur community, the Blood Reserve, is the largest geographical reserve in all of Canada, so transportation is obviously a major barrier for a lot of our clients. A lot don\u2019t have access to transportation. There\u2019s not a whole of programming to help with that.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><cite>Kash Shade, BTDH<\/cite><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After an analysis of the community\u2019s requirements and the need for a mobile medical van to help overcome these challenges, the BTDH took delivery of and implemented a Mobile Health Unit.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><\/p>\r\n<p><a style=\"border-radius: 5px; background-color: #8cc63e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/fr\/camionnettes-medicales-mobiles\/mobile-medical-clinic-van\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See Mobile Medical Van<\/a><\/p>\r\n<figure>\r\n<figcaption>Credit: Kash Shade, BTDH<br \/><br \/><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"background-color: #f5f5f5;\"><strong>Community Establishes a Mobile Medical Unit Program<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of implementing a Mobile Medical Unit Program was to complement existing services, specifically Medical Transportation and Home Care Nursing. The program was designed for the Mobile Medical Unit to go to clients who require services, eliminating the need for them to attend a traditional health clinic. It removes the barriers to transportation that many community members face, meaning more clients would take advantage of the services.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This model of health service delivery would also provide clients who would typically feel a lack of confidentiality when accessing help. \u00a0The van is unmarked so it remains discreet, regardless of the service needed. It eliminates the stigma of receiving medical help that may be sensitive.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"background-color: #f5f5f5;\"><strong>BTDH Mobile Medical Unit Program, A Few Months On<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late 2021, we connected with Mr. Shade to discuss the impacts of the Mobile Medical Unit Program. As the Mobile Medical Unit is being shared between multiple programs, the community is finding more and more uses for the vehicle. The Mobile Medical Van is now phased into other programs, including:<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Medical Transportation<\/li>\r\n<li>Home Care Nursing<\/li>\r\n<li>Opioid Crisis Response<\/li>\r\n<li>Sexual Health<\/li>\r\n<li>COVID-19 Vaccination<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThis is really where the Medical Van through MoveMobility has been a really great benefit to have for our community. However, the risk of outbreaks associated with travelling in large numbers with no social distancing meant this was no longer an option.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is vital to the community\u2019s health to maintain the pharmacy trips, so the Mobile Medical Unit is used to supplement the program.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><strong><em>\u201cIt is manned by a 3-nurse team. They use the Medical Van to deliver opioid therapy medication \u2013 Suboxone and Methadone \u2013 from pharmacies on reserve and off-reserve partners. The nurses pick up the medicine and deliver to community members who do not have access to transportation.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><em>With help from the Nursing team and the MoveMobility vehicle, we are able to offer that service to those clients.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><cite>Kash Shade, BTDH<\/cite><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the opioid crisis, harm reduction training and delivery of naloxone kits is also available. By making them more accessible, the community can expand the reach of these life-saving treatments.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"background-color: #f5f5f5;\"><strong>Going Beyond Medical Transportation and Crisis Response<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Shade also shared that in addition the regular services provided as part of Home Care Nursing, the Mobile Medical Unit allows health workers to support patients who would otherwise have to visit a physician clinic.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><strong>&#8220;<em>Because of the awesome layout of the unit, they are able to add on extra nursing services that are not available through the Home Care program, such as phlebotomy and blood work.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><cite>Kash Shade, BTDH<\/cite><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On-reserve physician clinic can now refer clients to nurses for blood tests, who then deliver it to the labs, eliminating the need for clients to travel to a clinic.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><strong>\u00a0<em>\u201cIt is a big benefit for elders or anyone with mobility issues, on top of the transportation issues.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><cite>Kash Shade, BTDH<\/cite><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physicians have also explored virtual appointments through a laptop, enabling the Mobile Medical Unit to essentially bring the physician to the client.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<figure>\r\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_0501.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 640px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 640\/427;\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_0501.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_0501-400x267.jpg 400w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-original-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mobile Medical Units allow health services to be taken to the client.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"background-color: #f5f5f5;\"><strong>Reducing Stigma Around Personal Treatment in a Close-Knit Community<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mobile Medical Unit has phased into other programs, including the Sexual Health Program. The community is realizing more advantages to having additional clinic spaces that are not traditional health centres.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe Sexual Health Program is very stigmatized for anyone having to into a Sexual Health clinic and be visible. Especially being a tight-knit community, even though we are so widespread,\u201d <\/em>Mr. Shade said.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><cite>Kash Shade, BTDH<\/cite><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Serving as a one-on-one space within the unit, the Mobile Medical Van accommodates clients for private treatment. Clients aren\u2019t perceived to be receiving any given treatment, as the vehicle is unmarked and now provides a wide variety of health services.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThey could be going in there for bloodwork or be going in there for sexual health treatment, anonymous to whatever you see. It means more members can get vaccinations, without having to struggle through barriers to transportation or mobility.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThey did give out COVID vaccines through the van to catch those groups that weren\u2019t coming to our main clinic because of transportation and mobility issues.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><cite>Kash Shade, BTDH<\/cite><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mobile Medical Unit has even been on standby as an extra asset to large vaccine clinics, providing a private space nearby for clients who need additional nursing care.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"background-color: #f5f5f5;\"><strong>The Future of the Mobile Medical Unit Program<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the Mobile Medical Unit\u2019s impact on so many of the community\u2019s programs and services, Mr. Shade says they\u2019re opening it up to all divisions of the Blood Tribe Department of Health.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next team to incorporate will likely be the Mental Health team, to provide a new mobile space for counselling services.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the community\u2019s needs for mental health clinics and addictions counselling, the Mobile Medical Unit bridges the gap between clients who need help but are fearful of being judged for visibly receiving it.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<figure>\r\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1599.jpg\" alt=\"Mobile medical clinic in Ford Transit 148 Wheelbase, Single Rear Wheel, High Roof Model. Aside from the advantage of the privacy that the van offers, he said:<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><em><strong>\u201cReally, we see it as an extension of our physician clinic and a treatment room. It\u2019s really like you\u2019re bringing the clinic to the client.
