She has a handful of clients and she\u2019s focused on providing direct, one-to-one community support services such as community outings and building relationships.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, she applied for a<strong> <\/strong><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.communitylivingbc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Community Living BC<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grant that would allow her to purchase a wheelchair van.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And she got it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with that success came a new challenge: how was Armitage going to find the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wheelchair van for her clients?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After receiving the grant, Armitage contacted MoveMobility. autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\"><\/iframe><span class=\"smush-play-btn\" role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Play video\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<span tabindex=\"0\" class=\"smush-play-btn-inner\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<span>Play<\/span>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/span>\r\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The challenge ConnectABILITY Okanagan faced<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armitage first noticed a need for a wheelchair van when she took on a client in a wheelchair.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[The client\u2019s] access to the community was quite limited,\u201d said Armitage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While ConnectABILITY\u2019s services are mainly one-on-one, Armitage likes taking her clients out on group \u201cfield trips\u201d.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, because she didn\u2019t have an accessible vehicle, group outings were difficult to coordinate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armitage would sometimes have to rely on the wheelchair user\u2019s caregiver to drop him off at locations because she did not have an accessible vehicle.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt didn\u2019t allow for a lot of flexibility,\u201d said Armitage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For every group outing, Armitage would have to take two or three cars to ensure everyone was able to get to the location.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How we responded<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a relatively new service provider, Armitage said she didn&#8217;t know<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/resources\/how-to-choose-a-wheelchair-van\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <strong>the right questions to ask to find the best wheelchair van for her agency<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because she had never bought an accessible vehicle before.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She didn\u2019t know if she should get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/resources\/rear-entry-vs-side-entry-wheelchair-vans-pros-cons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>a side or rear entry van<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how each option would affect parking.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She didn\u2019t know how a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/resources\/ramps-vs-lifts-wheelchair-vans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ramp vs. a lift<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> <\/strong>would impact the efficiency of getting her clients in and out of the vehicle.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And she didn\u2019t know how to find the answers she needed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While MoveMobility is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Mississauga, Ontario, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/resources\/delivering-wheelchair-vans-across-canada-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we deliver vans all over Canada<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, we set up a meeting with Armitage and another organization that had purchased a wheelchair van from us previously in B.C. Armitage was able to go to the organization and see what the van looked like and how it worked in person.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, as it turned out, that wheelchair van was exactly what ConnectABILITY Okanagan had been looking for.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized is-style-default\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.movemobility.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ConnectABILITY-Wheelchair-van-2.jpg\" alt=\"Connect ABILITY clients smiling in front of MoveMobility wheelchair van\" class=\"wp-image-135823\" style=\"width:640px;height:480px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Credit: Julie Armitage, ConnectABILITY Okanagan<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The results<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ConnectABILITY received their van in early 2023, and it \u201cmade a world of difference,\u201d according to Armitage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Connection&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armitage said that before, her clients who use wheelchairs would not always be able to join the group for outings because they didn\u2019t have the correct vehicle.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey\u2019ve spent a lot of time at home and being isolated,\u201d said Armitage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Armitage can go pick up clients from their homes and take them to community outings, such as art programs.
